Reality Check

  • NOTE: Our Spring 2006 Final Exam time is 8-10 am Thursday, May 4. We'll use this time to view our final projects and have our final quiz the week before.
  • Next week we'll cover subtitles, scripts and some other advanced features. As well we'll review for the final quiz on Thursday.
  • The Tuesday after next (4/25) we won't have class. I'll be at NAB.
  • Final quiz is next Thursday (4/27), during our regular class time.
  • We'll review final DVD projects during our final exam time: 8:00-10:00 a.m., Thurs, May 4.

Final Project Video_TS Drafts: Place into your week 13 folder.

DVD Studio Pro Finishing & Output (Sitter chapters 19 & 20):

Always think through your DVD navigation thoroughly. It's easy to direct a user to an area- getting them back gracefully is another matter. If you send someone to an element from a submenu (a scene menu or extras menu for example) consider where you want them to return to if they press "menu" again. Sometimes it's frustrating for them to be returned to the top menu, when they wanted to go back to the submenu.

  • First play needs to be set and/or checked. It's automatically set to the topmost menu in DVDSP. Be sure this is what you want.
  • Remote Control Keys (assignable) By default will take on project's settings. Users expect consistency here. Be careful if you alter their expectations. You can also set each track and slideshow differently.
  • User operations can be disabled in the Inspector. (Forcing folks to sit through previews and/or FBI warnings, etc.) To do this first select a track, then click on the Inspector's "User Operations" tab. Be sure not to generate a "negative experience" in the user with this.
  • The "Connections" tab can be used to see and set links for your project. You can view basic, standard, or advanced. The "Source" column displays all the possible source elements (Buttons, chapters, scripts, etc.) The "Target" column displays all of the possible targets. Note that there are separate icons for buttons, menus and chapters, etc. To use: Drag the appropriate icon from the right hand side to the source target on the left-hand side.
    • Resume button- function is to return the user back to the last played track. It can be set with the Connections tool or simply with the Inspector.
  • Creating a hybrid DVD. Select a DVD-ROM folder. Everything in this folder will be dumped out to the root level of the DVD. You may want to place folder in here as well.
  • Region Codes - (hardwired into DVD players, accepts or rejects disk)
  • CSS Copy protection (you can flag- must be done by replicator)
  • Macrovision (proprietary license)
  • Building a disc (multiplexing) doesn't copy files to DVD. It simply builds the Video_TS and Audio_TS folders.
  • Build & format (multiplexes, formats and copies onto a DVD)
    • VOB - video, audio & subtitles
    • IFO - button definitions & jumps
    • BUP - backup IFO info
  • Embedded text - Some DVD players can display text info. If you want to use embeedded text click on the checkbox in the Inspector.
  • Jacket _pictures - You can embed a picture to be shown on the screen, displayable by some DVD players. If you want to use this, import an appropriate asset (picture) into your project. At the bottom of the Inspector's window you can select a picture.
  • It's usually best to build your disc first. Then test it with Apple's DVD player. Once you've tested it, you can load the Video_TS in either DVDSP or Toast and format it to a DVD. If you use Toast, be sure to delete these three files:
    • DS_Store
    • DVD_layout
    • VOB_DATALAY
    • Render Data (only there if you've used DVDSP to render)
  • Close all other applications when burning to DVD with Toast or with DVDSP.
  • DLT tapes (digital linear tape). Often required for professional replication & copy-protected  DVDs. You'll need a DLT drive and tape hooked up to your system. There are two different formats for DLT tapes: DDP and CMF. EIther one should work but DDP is used more frequently in the US.

If you want to practice outputting your project to DVD, bring a DVD to Thursday's class.

Thursday --------------------------------

Carry out the Internet Resource Exercise

Homework:

  • Read Sitter 22, 24 & 25
  • Create a 16 x 9 DVD menu and track with subtitles (20 points)
    • Create a simple 16 x 9 project in FCP. You can use just images or graphics if you like. Just be sure you're it's a true 16x9/widescreen project or your video or images won't display properly. Also be sure there is some type of soundtrack.
    • Create a nice-looking menu in Photoshop. (You can use this opportunity to display your mastery of creating a 16 x 9 TV graphic.) Consider also that you want to give the user an option of viewing the track with or without subtitles.
    • Use compressor to export a 16 x 9 mpeg
    • Open up DVDSP. (Hint: You'll probably want to change the preference for SD Menus, Tracks & Slideshows to 16 x 9)
    • Import your MPEG, menu and audio.
    • Create subtitles that span the duration of your track. It doesn't matter what words you use- just use 1 stream in english.
    • Author, build and test your Video_TS before turning it in.
